RUN No. 1959A 2 Dec 08 ARES : Roisin Write Up : Amanda - GM
A good size pack congregated in the park by Park & Shop in Clearwater Bay, ready for what Roisin described as a short run. As soon as Little Dick returned from Park & Shop with a new torch in hand, off we set.
The trail started off down some steps – a welcome change from the thousands of uphill steps on Grace & Cynthia’s run last week – then continued down to Silverstrand Beach past those set up for the night around their barbeque pits. Up some steps where the next check really had us confused; Tracey & Raymond sprinted downhill, Frankie was last seen heading off in the opposite direction, but to no avail. After 5 minutes of confusion and passing the blame back and forth doubting fellow hashers’ checking abilities, we back tracked and found a check. At least we knew which way not to go, so continued up the hill instead.
My mind is still swimming in alcohol from the Men’s Hash Ball on Saturday night so can’t remember exactly where the trail went, but it involved steps, uphill, dark trails & packs of barking dogs. At one point the trail continued back onto Clearwater Bay Road, and up another path that Rita took us on a few weeks ago. Up steps, down steps, flour dropped on corners where the trail could potentially go in a different direction, which it invariable did. Great hash views too, although don’t think the men at the front of the pack were quite as interested as they had their minds on the cold beers back at the bins.
The trail then continued to old Hang Hau village, where it just seemed to disappear, although it did bring the pack back together. As the “short” run was proving not to be as short as the hares claimed, Hanky Panky Frankie decided he knew the way back to the start so decided to shortcut with Jill & Tracey. The rest of us backtracked to see what we could find, and then found an arrow leading us through the car park and in, around, back on ourselves, round in circles and back the other way around Hang Hau, finally taking us up some steps to a main road where we came upon Frankie & his noble followers, (who then promptly changed allegiance and blamed him for taking them on a bad short cut!) The trail continued up a few more steps – what would hashing be like in HK without steps? – and back to the start. Short run? 1 hr 20 minutes later!
Back at the bins the numbers had swelled so after replenishing lost fluids we on on’d to Roisin’s for Lasagne & healthy salads of every variety. Thank you to Roisin & Leeta for such delicious food and for being great hosts.
Down downs were given to:
May & Kandi – for not wearing hash T-shirts. Bobo wasn’t either, but she was excused as she’s still waiting for one from Kandi!
Ann – new
hair do.
Frankie & Jill – shortcutting.
Raymond – leading the GM astray at the Hash Ball and keeping her out in Wanchai until 3am.
Graeme & May (visitor) – for Graeme bringing his harem of women to the Mens’ Hash Ball, (May being one of them.)
Mike Stokoe, Mabel & Roisin – for great outfits at the H4 Ball.
Little Dick – returning member.
May – visitor.
Mr Brown, Agnes, Maggi, Rita, Georgianna - latecomers & non runners.
Mr Brown again, for drinking someone else’s down down.
Maggi & Kandi – representing LH4 at the Macau 500th at the weekend, and Kandi meeting up with her beau from the LH4 trip in September. Could this be loooooove?
Roisin & Sophia – hares
H4 Ball

There is also a Pussy Hash on May 5. It’s usually on the first Tuesday night of every month and all runs are in Hanoi only. Those who are more flexible and can stay longer may want to do that run too. It would be nice to turn that run into a special event (too). Other exciting events will be organized…….. For the trip to Brunei some of us made our own flight reservations to suit our own needs or do any of you wish a group ticket? For people who have to be back at work on Monday, one possible schedule to Hanoi is on Dragon Airlines on Thursday, 30th April on KA 295, leaving HK at 17.55pm, returning on Sunday, 3 May on KA 294, leaving Hanoi at 10.45am. Vietnam Airlines, CX and China Southern also have flights. Can you please give me some indication before Friday 31 October if you would like to go on this trip and whether you will make your own flight arrangements? If anyone finds a good deal for flights, perhaps they can let me know. Once we have an idea of the numbers, I’ll source hotels and/or packages in more detail. Sheila ******************************************************************************* No. 1959 18 Nov 08 HARE : Grace & Cynthia WRITE UP : Mike Stokoe
We set off quite promptly up Pak Fuk Road and soon found a two way check. The GM, Raymond and Mike S guessed luckily that the trail went straight up one of the longest flight of steps in Hong Kong, continuing under the higher section of Pak Fuk, and eventually reaching the stub end of Braemar Hill Road near Wilshire Towers. From there, we went up through a couple of checks, ending at a check on Sir Cecil's Ride. By that time, Jacmi was the lead, with her two male escorts trying to keep up. Trail went left for quite a way, then down a steep path to Mount Parker Road and an on home close to Quarry Bay station, where Mabel was spotted going the wrong way to the bins. Good Samaritan Raymond put her on the correct course before resuming his charge for the bins and cold beer. An excellent run and very well marked by the hares, even if some of the checks were quite long. Not that this affected Jacmi, who seems to be running quite a bit faster these days. In fact, the run was done at a good pace by all, with the rest of the pack soon in, to join the walking wounded and non-runners at the bins.
The fairly short session at the bins included as entertainment a reprise of the Kung Fu Panda dance from the Sedan Chair race at the Matilda on Sunday. All dancers were in the costumes, except for Maggie who had her bag stolen at some point on the Sunday afternoon. Excitement over, the hares and GM called On On to a Chinese restaurant on Tsat Tsz Mui Road, where we had excellent food for the incredible price of $90, and if you were on the table with Mike Brown and BoBo you had the extra treat of some high-quality wine!
Down Downs:
Ruth – being nervous sitting next to the GM and trying to pour herself a glass of wine with the cork still in.
Sedan Chair team – Jacmi, Ann, Sophia, Grace, Agnes, Maggi, Georgiana, Tracey, Amanda.
Mabel, Rachel & Cynthia – for helping out at Sedan Chair.
Trevor – for giving the GM great Grandparenting advice: when your 3 yr old is having a tantrum about wanting an ice cream you give in and give them one before and another one after.
Raymond – for not serving Sheila food and drink in the same manner Trevor’s ‘girls’ were.
Lost property – Sophia, hat and Maggi for losing her bag with her Panda costume & sponsorship form in. However she remembered just as she was getting on the bus after the Sedan Chair, but decided to call her friend to see if he could find it rather than not getting on the bus.
Roisin & Sheila – needing more practice as AGM’s as one needed a reminder to do the write up and phone calls/texts back and forth trying to remember the down downs.
GM – mistake.
Pauline – new member.
Visitors – Regine, Bobo’s daughter.
Hares – Cynthia & Grace.
Sedan Chair Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Sedan Chair, both at fundraisers and through sponsorship. Our Kung Fu Pandas won 3rd place in the ‘Best Crowd Participation’ category and appeared on both the English & Chinese News as well as in the Mingpao Newspaper. Well done to Jacmi, Grace, Agnes, Sophia, Tracey, Maggie, Ann, Georgiana & Amanda, and also to Mabel, Rachel, Cynthia, Paddy, Check Back Sam for helping out.

Run No. 1924 Hare: Rita Scribe: Jill
If you forget to ask anyone to do the write up before the run and no-one volunteers after the run then you have little choice but to do the bloody thing yourself, have you?! Notwithstanding the fact that you have put the newsletter together and sent it out every week for most of the last 21 months, that you have XGM duties as well as being a committee member and that you are helping to set the next two runs. Thanks for your help fellow hashers. Am I peeved? Not in the least! Are you sympathetic? As a certain hasher would say, "If you are looking for sympathy, it's between shit and syphalis in the dictionary!" Just as well then that our wonderful government decided late Wednesday night to close all primary schools a week early.
So, what can I remember about the run? Not much. Left Hang Hau MTR station after depositing our bags near the taxi stand, circumnavigated Hang Hau for a while before heading up, up, up over Yau Yue Wan hill and down, down, down towards Shaw Studio and home to the bins in the car park behind Rita's place.
Stood around at the bins for a while during which time we were joined by various non-runners - Lee who is still recovering from a spelll in hospital, Wendy who called in after her epidemiology night class (oooh! clever or what?), Treevor and relos who arrived by taxi fresh from holidaying in Pattaya and Connie who had travelled the breadth of the territory from the wilds of Tuen Mun specially to be with us – such delightful company are we!
On On into Rita's place where we promptly began to trash the place, throwing red wine over her pristine white sofa cover and beer over her telephone. Then we settled down to enjoy an excellent home cooked meal of shepherd's (or was it cottage) pie, carrots and peas, followed by apple pie and custard or cream.
Apple pie. Mmmh!
Thank you, once again, Rita for opening up your flat to the LH4 rabble. We will all understand if you decide not to do so again!
Our hostess – still smiling in spite of it all
Down downs
Mike for being the first one back
Connie & Mr Brown for discussing German politics Raymond & Thunder Thighs for wearing/designing a London Hash sweatshirt
Thunder Thighs visitor
Connie, Treevor and relos non-runners
Sophia, Maggi & May making the red wine stain worse
Lee recovering
Maggie for something not clear in Karen's notes! Luka smoking
Liz & Jill Liz's write up lost its title – A Dogs Life – somewhere in the editing process

Run No. 1923 Hare: Frankie Scribe: Liz
Standing just outside an exit at Wong Tai Sin station, I looked for signs of Hash life, only to find Ruth and Sheila doing the same thing. Whilst searching for a loo, we were approached by two “travelling hashers” who had just flown in from The Philippines. They’d come straight from the airport and were ready to experience the LH - their first HK hash (I think they were also planning on going to that ‘other’ one that takes place on a Wednesday night). We all eventually found the start where Frankie and Sophia were waiting patiently for the usual crowd to show. It was at about this point that I was approached by Ruth (in the absence of Jill) to do the write-up. I searched desperately for excuses but obviously none were convincing enough. I guess letting it slip in conversation that I’m a journalist didn’t really do anything for my cause. We then introduced our new found travelling hashers: Gerit, a German living in Fiji and Dan (I think German as well) who lives in The Philippines.Their Hash tour started in Puerto Gellera, then moved on to Subic Bay, they joined us in HK, then they were heading for Macau, Johor Bahru, Jakarta, Bali and then Padeng where Gerit will send Dan home and he will carry on to finish the tour at the ultimate Inter-Hash taking place in Perth on March 20. So, the pressure was on to show these travelling hashers what a dedicated and professional outfit we are. More eager runners eventually showed including Raymond with his new Austrian flatmate, Daniel. Daniel is replacing Claudia ….those poor things … is it part of their contract to come on the hash? I know that Austrians like to up-stage the rest of the world in the fashion stakes, but turning up to a hash wearing a suit is a bit extreme wouldn’t you say? So, Daniel quickly got changed as more hashers showed including another newbie, Rachael’s niece Yonnie – who turned up wearing too many clothes, so she was swiftly told to strip-off as well. We all set off at 6.55pm after a warning from Frankie about the ‘monkeys in the mountain’. The start was easy to find. We were then taken through the relatively flat streets of Wan Tai Sing before starting a steady climb. Ruth and ? (you know who you are) soon admitted to crossing an arrow on a cross-check without actually doing any checking … so, Agnes and I went off to check and sure enough found flour, chalk and eventually On On, putting us well into the lead as we started to climb even further. We soon entered rougher terrain where arrows were missed and we almost made a very big shortcut finding arrows and flour meant for the end of the run. When we realised we must have missed a loop, Mike said “I’ll wait here for you to do the loop” (which looked like it was heading much further up the mountain). He would’ve been waiting a while which I guess is how he ended up returning to the start forty minutes before the rest of us! The younger folk climbed and climbed up stairs, stairs and more stairs all in the direction of Lion Rock. I don’t think anyone encountered a monkey which most of us had forgotten about anyway as we struggled to keep going. Finally, the decent came, down and down towards a busy road. Just as we approached the road, we were all startled by a very loud bang followed immediately by a squeal. We’d encountered a hit’n’run of the canine kind. Being the caring hashers that we are, we all stopped to help the poor thing that appeared to be in its final moments, unable to move from the road. Sophia flagged down a taxi driver and used his mobile phone to call the police. A friendly and innovative van driver then stopped to help as well. He lifted a bin off the pavement and put it close to the dog. He then tied some tape that he had in the back of his van around the bin and linked it to street lights to create a road-block so cars wouldn’t run over our patient. Ruth and others waved at drivers to slow down as they were approaching the scene. After waiting for 20mins or so for the police to arrive, a few of us decided to proceed with the hash and were joined about ten minutes later by the others. Now this is where it all goes wrong for Frankie. In his defence, I think a lot of the arrows and markings had been rubbed-out in the park – so, the run home was a long one. But, eventually we all made it back by 8.35 … and wait for it – “ALL TOGETHER”. I’m told that everyone returning at the same time is a rare occurrence. So, I guess the ‘dog and hare’ ought to be thanked for that. A good run despite the ‘hard to find’ markings and a poor dog that has probably by now, met its maker. Two old tarts, Rita and Margie turned up for the booze and food. We told them our tale of a poor dog before heading to the On On at San Kwong Restaurant. Jenni, Sophia’s friend also joined us. Twenty of us sat around two tables and we enjoyed delicious food including some very tasty pigeon.
Highlights of the night included a singing waiter, Rita’s comment that songs from the 60’s “aren’t really that old”
and the presence of our equivalent to the Holy Bible – “The World Hash Directory” which was passed around by our visiting hashers. Love was in the air for Daniel and Yonnie as phone numbers were exchanged and much tinkering of chopsticks. Aunty Rachael looked on with an eagle eye (c’mon Rachael, she’s 17 …. and a half!!!).
Down-Downs
Were given by Ruth and Margie in the absence of GM Karen.
Margie for wearing a Little Sai Wan t-shirt
Hare, Frankie for sparing the flour and chalk
Raymond for helping old tart, Ruth, down the hill when her torch failed
Raymond again for sending demanding text messages to Margie
Daniel for turning up in a suit
Yonnie for saying she didn’t want any beer ‘cause she doesn’t want to get fat’.
Visitors: Three Men and a Little Lady – Dan, Gerit, Daniel and Jenni.
Three Men again … for a reason I can’t remember …
Mike for shortcutting, hence his 40min lead. Margie for being a ‘lovely English lady’ and helping an old man by walking him all the way to the MTR Sophia for not contacting hubby, Frankie to let him know what was taking us so long.
